Search for Volunteers to Make Betty’s Wish Come True

Betty Barley View The Calico Group

We are appealing for volunteers from the local community to read to one of our residents who is feeling disconnected from the world.

Betty Kidger, 88, has been a resident with us since we  first opened our doors in December 2018 and lost her sight eight years ago, which left her feeling incredibly lonely.

During a recent chat with Betty, Jane Williamson, Head of Care, discovered that her most longed-for wish is a simple one; to have someone who can commit to reading to her weekly and help her practice writing her name.

This would be a great opportunity for those local to Whitworth to make a real difference to Betty’s life and who are looking for a fulfilling way to spend their own free time.

Ideally, volunteers will have a kind, caring and patient nature and be able to commit to spending an hour a week with Betty in an afternoon or evening that works around any existing responsibilities they may have.

Gemma Howarth, Senior Care Assistant at Barley View, said: “Betty loves to reminisce and has lots of wonderful stories to tell us; she always says she could write a book about them! She loves to talk, listening to music, and enjoys having a story read to her.

“Betty also goes to blind club every Tuesday and really enjoys this. She is a lovely lady with a big heart, and her smile brightens up everyone’s day. She truly is a beautiful person.”

If you would like to volunteer for the role or find out more information, please contact Andrea Douglas by emailing adouglas@calico.org.uk. All volunteers will need to agree to a DBS check being carried out which will be funded by us.
